"It didn't make me sick," Bull told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

But then Police Officer Wendell Adams got a burger made with the oversalted meat, and he returned a short time later and told the manager it made him sick.

Bull admitted spilling salt on the meat, and Adams took her outside and questioned her, she said.

"If it was too salty, why did (Adams) not take one bite and throw it away?" said Bull, who has worked at the restaurant for five months. She said she didn't know a police officer got one of the salty burgers because she couldn't see the drive-through window from her work area.

Police said samples of the burger were sent to the state crime lab for tests.

City public information officer George Louth said Bull was charged because she served the burger "without regards to the well-being of anyone who might consume it."

Whoops...

I finished the short story within one night, but never did get around to blogging about it. I've been having issues logging into blogger from home this week for some reason. Anyway, as I said before I finished up the original version of Brokeback Mountain very quickly, and have to say that the movie followed it almost exactly, right down to dialouge. I liked it! :)

I'm still rereading Goblet of Fire, but am taking my time on the series this time around so it'll probably be awhile before I finish it. Probably next up on my current reading list is a book called Vampirates (please remind me to find out who the author is, later), which is a book that Craig handed me from our donations section. It looks to be about exactly what the title hints at - vampires and pirates! Sounds interesting, as I am the PiratePrincess, and enjoy my share of darker subjects like vampires, as well.

Ciao for now!

Books and Bad Baseball...

I saw a picture yesterday that amused me to no end (I think credit to the photo goes to Yahoo!Sports ?). This is just totally craptastic, lmao. I thought the Orioles had hit an all-time low the other week with that game where the other teamed scored 30 runs, but it's pathetic when fans have to resort to this, to protest:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_R7dxgfsFj_Y/RtpqT5vi92I/AAAAAAAAAAs/2OCY-4Hg4Ck/s320/OFansLMAO.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105510017728182114" />

Ah well, hopefully it'll bring about much better management or something positive (one can dream, right? lol).

The other topic of this blog post...Books. What am I reading this week?

Still rereading the Harry Potter series now (I'm currently on Goblet of Fire), although I've stopped momentarily to read a couple of items that came up on hold for me the other day, one of them being a MARINA loan so I have to read it pretty quickly.

As a fan of the movie Somewhere In Time, I've wanted to read the novel (originally called Bid Time Return, but later changed with the popularity of the film) for the longest time, but could never find it. Thanks to MARINA, I got to read it this weekend. Although I already knew some of the things that were going to be different in the book (I won't say what, incase someone here plans to read it), there were some things that really caught me off guard and pleasantly surprised me that weren't in the movie...Much more face time with Richard Collier and Elise McKenna! :) I felt like the book filled in some major plotholes from the movie, so that was great, too. The book also had some rather funny internal commentary from Richard that had me rolling. This wasn't really expressed in the film, as you usually can't tell what he's thinking except by watching his facial expressions, words, and actions. I have to say that if you're interested in a very beautifully-written, touching story, check out this novel by Richard Matheson. It's definitely a page-turner.

As I write this, I'm beginning the book, Brokeback Mountain. I wanted to read the original short story, by Annie Proulx, which of course later became a touching film starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. ;-) It seems to follow the movie pretty closely so far. I'll give my thoughts on this book in a future post, once I've finished it.

Happy Labor Day Weekend! :)

Yummy!

Clips from the play, The King & I, that I wanted to see, but unfortunately didn't get to attend this time around. I like the mp3 player so far. I haven't figured out all of the features yet, but I did figure out how to install it (very user-friendly so far) and upload some songs. I already have a huge playlist going (a bunch of things I had saved on my computer for a long time) and have been listening all day. :) What fun! It'll be great to finally delete a bunch of files from my computer so that I have more room on it. :) I haven't ventured into downloading any audiobooks yet, as I'm a bit apprehensive about doing it since I'm on dialup internet at home. I'm going to go ahead and answer the questions individually as they were listed on the site. :)

1. What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
My favorites were creating my blog, Flickr mashups, creating my own virtual shelf on Library Thing, and Youtube.

2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals? I learned a bit more about technology than I would've otherwise and it made me feel more knowledgable and confident in helping others, as well. Several of the sites listed I hadn't heard about before.I think the program also taught me a bit more about working towards goals within a certain amount of time. I liked how everything was set for me, week-by-week, because I'm generally a bit disorganized when it comes to doing activities in this manner. It also helped me in my 7 & 1/2 Habits. Although I'm still uncomfortable about viewing problems as challenges, I am less uncomfortable about it than I was before.

3. Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
Not really, but I think I was surprised at how much I didn't know about sites that existed.

4. What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
Maybe include a few more tutorials for some of the more difficult exercises. Other than that, I think it's fine so far as it is.

5. If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?
I might participate again if they included some fun, user-friendly, activities (and incentives?).

6. How would you describe your learning experience in a few words or a few sentences, so we can share our successes and promote this program?
There isn't much to say except that I enjoyed the experience and the explanations on each Discovery exercise page were mostly pretty helpful. I had fun doing this, this summer! :)

In conclusion, if my fellow co-workers (like Craig) end up keeping their blogs, I might just keep using this blog to keep in touch with everyone. This has been fun this summer, and broke-up a bit of the usual things I do at work each year. I even told several of my friends about the program, in hopes that they might learn a litte bit of something new about technology, as well. I'm glad I participated in this.

Week 9, Thing 22

I liked the look of Overdrive, from watching the tutorial. It looked somewhat user-friendly and I liked the design of the site. I tried to find several different authors and book titles from Project Gutenberg without any success, unforunately. As I'm currently on a dialup internet at home, I don't see myself downloading audio books personally. I think I'd prefer to get audio books the old fashioned way in the physical sense, by checking one out at my local library. Still, it's nice to have this as a possibility for other folks. :)

Hello, Mr. Battery-Eater...Goodbye, Extra $ (Ranting)

MUNCH..MUNCH..MUNCH...

That lovely little portable cd player that I bought the other month has so far turned out to have been more trouble than it's probably worth. I selected 2 podcasts from Yahoo Podcasts. The first was a Phantom of the Opera podcast appropriately titled Phancast. The other was a Harry Potter audio called Snapecast, which featured a male host whose voice (no offense, it works for this particular podcast lol) reminded me a bit of the type of voice you'd expect a creepy funeral director who doesn't get out much, to have! :p Both of these podcasts can be found in my bloglines account. My bloglines account link is still located on the sidebar of my blog for your convenience. It looks like various libraries are finding some interesting ways to use podcasting. In my searching, I discovered that there are interviews with authors, tutorials for staff and patrons, booktalks, stories being read, library news, and that's only a few of the ways libraries use podcasts. I guess podcasts ARE pretty useful!

Backstreet's Back, All Right. I'll admit, I'm not super excited about the album yet, but hearing a rumor that it's supposed to be similar to Millennium gives me a tiny glimmer of hope. I MIGHT hit up the promo tour (maybe) with one of my best friends, Aleisha, if there's a locale available to us, and I can fit it into my schedule and have the $ to go, etc.

Ciao for now!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://23thingspirate.blogspot.com/2007/08/backstreets-back-all-right-lol.html' title='Backstreet's Back, All Right. Although I've never personally uploaded a video, I've been using it for quite sometime on my own, usually to find videos of muscians or actors that I like, vintage TV clips of shows no longer on the air, clips from plays or concerts, and music videos. My friends and I love swapping video links to amuse each other on a regular basis. I could see Youtube being helpful to library websites in a number of ways. Perhaps we could film library events and/or storytimes and have them for viewing on the page. Maybe we could even post tutorials for a number of different procedures for librarians and patrons, alike. The following clip is a video of the song "Music Of The Night" from a stage production of The Phantom of the Opera, as sung by Howard McGillin (sp?). I chose this video because Howard played the Phantom when I went to see the show on Broadway in 2006, so it was nice to sort of relive the experience. I'm intrigued by the stage direction of this particular performance as Erik (the Phantom) completely seduces Christine with his voice and charms, to the point where they come very close to kissing. It appears to be a very tender performance between Howard and Sandra Joseph (Christine). I hope you enjoy the video! :)

Week 8, Thing 19: Web 2.0 Awards list

I'm a huge fan of of music, so I decided to select a winning site from the Web 2.0 list, called Pandora. I'd never heard of Pandora so I wasn't familiar with its features at all. I did a search for a couple of artists. Two of the artists were found immediately, and one artist's search results yielded not the artist herself, but the artist's mother (the more famous of the two, so I suppose that's okay lol). It appears that you can create an account for yourself and have your own radio stations with whichever artists that you wish. Checking out the site a little further, I discovered that the site will even give you results of other similar artists that might fit your music tastes. It appears that once you sample songs from a certain album it gives you the option of being directed to a site to purchase the full cd if you so desire. This looks like a decent site, although I'm not sure if I'd use it on a regular basis or not as I personally prefer Yahoo! Music (not on the list of winners, which I find interesting), but further use of this site may at some point prove otherwise. I don't really see this being a tool that we librarians would use on a normal basis unless to be used to preview music artists that we might want to buy for future music collections. We might, however, be able to suggest it to patrons who wish to listen to music via headphones, on our free internet terminals.

Week 8, Thing 18

I published something from Zoho, here. I've even had a hand in taking it upon myself in keeping the Wikipedia of a lesser known actor that I'm a fan and supporter of, updated, by adding much more information on his career to his page than was previously shared. The one thing I don't like about Wikipedia though is that because it can be updated by ANYONE (a simultaneous blessing and curse, lol) sometimes false information can be posted or the page can even be spammed with junk having nothing to do with the actual topic at hand. I enjoyed learning more about other wikis in this discovery exercise and other resources. I was impressed and found it interesting that libraries are finding many different purposes for wikis in order to keep themselves and also sometimes the general public and their patrons informed. I think that wikis could be used not only to publish upcoming library and local community events, but I could see a wiki being beneficial even to our in-staff applications like the Minutes and our staff Pipeline! In theory, I bet there could even be step-by-step written tutorials for training pertaining to certain aspects and procedures in staff members' jobs (for example, there might be a page teaching Pages about Circulation duties like how to deal with blocks on patrons' library records or the procedures for filling out new library cards). Rather than sending these all out by individual staff emails, a wiki could post all of this in one place with separate links to the different topics and 1 email could be sent out with the link to the wiki and announcing that the page had been updated with new information. :) I've learned through self-exploration and these exercises that wikis could basically contain anything and everything.

What I think the significance of 23 Things is...

Our liason asked us to add this to our blogs, so here is my response.

I think 23 Things is to valuable to myself because it taught me about other technologies online, some of which I didn't know existed. First off, I liked the idea of using the ships and icebergs methaphors to describe how libraries will be "sailing" into the future. It's great that as we expand our services, we'll be able to not only offer patrons many print items such as books, but other items like digital video, blogs, podcasts, and much, much more! I also loved that libraries are striving to make services to search for information, as user-friendly and simple as possible. I can see that one day, as technology continues to grow, that although I expect people to still use the physical library in some ways, we will be able to help patrons find what they're looking for online through a number of services, as well.

Library 2.0 - It's many things to many people. What does it mean to you?

For me, I think it means that the library will have various new ways to help people find exactly what information they're looking for.

Week 6, Thing 14...My discoveries about Technorati:

I took a look at Technorati and did a search for "“Learning 2.0”. It appears that atleast all of the search results that I found were blog entries for fellow pariticpants, giving their thoughts on some of the different activities in 23 Things. I found quite a few posts about Rollyo and Del.ici.ous! Next, I looked around the top favorited blog, top searches and top blogs section of the site and didn't really find anything surprising. I wasn't sure what a few things listed were, but most of the topics were hot topics that everyone has been talking about or involved with lately such as posts on Paris Hilton, Harry Potter, Myspace, Youtube, and the Live Earth concerts. There were also videos about Michael Moore, the new Iphone, and a performance from Live Earth, and it looks like Transformers and Live Free Or Die Hard are the top movies listed on the site at the moment. I'm not sure if I would use Rollyo a lot though personally. I tend to visit the same small handful of websites on a regular basis, while I usually search Google for topics or sites that I can't find. I can see how Rollyo would be helpful to some people, but I couldn't get it to work. No search results would come up even though I listed several different websites into my searchroll that I created. I tried a couple of different subjects: films (in general) and Phantom Of The Opera, but I couldn't get results from either one. Already, my new cd player is giving me issues. I'm wondering if maybe the batteries that I installed are bad? The cd player has stopped mid-song a couple of times today. It also seems extra sensitive to being touched, despite the fact that it's made with a sports/active person in mind. Maybe I'll need to keep the anti-shock feature on ALL OF THE TIME? lol Hmm... Another thing that's weird about this cd-player is that it's a bit more complicated to use than my previous ones. I actually had to read through the entire instructions manual, lol. Ah well, I'll get the hang of it, I hope.

Speaking of cds, I can't stop listening to Hinder's album, Extreme Behavior, lately. Ever since I got it several months ago, it's become one of my favorite cds. I had slowly fallen in love with their hit single, "Lips Of An Angel", late last year, so I became curious about the rest of their songs. It wasn't until one of my best friends played another song of theirs, the tragically beautiful "Better Than Me", though that I knew I had to get this cd. I found myself relating to a certain situation or two in the songs, and I also think that Austin Winkler, the band's lead singer, has a unique, sexy, and appealing quality to his raspy singing-voice. When I got the cd, I listened to it over and over and grew to love every song. For me, it's one of those albums that I find every song to be enjoyable, and I don't have to skip past any of them to get to the "decent" tracks. I really want to go see Hinder in concert this coming August because I just heard that they're on their way to MD. Not sure if that'll happen though. I'd rather not deal with a rock audience on my own, lol. Being on my own with a bunch of potentially drunk and aggressive men around, doesn't appeal to me, not to mention I'm claustophobic, so the mosh pit section is out of the question lol. I still have a local friend or two to ask about going to the show though, so we'll see how that goes. If it doesn't work out, I'll just have to live vicariously through one of my best friends (from another state) who has a ticket and possibly a backstage pass lol. :)

Week 4, Thing 9...

I think the easier method for finding feeds for me was probably just browsing sites on my own and finding the feeds that way, to add to bloglines at my leisure. Out of the Search tools given in this exercise (since Bloglines was discussed in the previous exercise), I think I liked Technorati the most. I found the other search tools to be far more confusing, and I didn't find what I was looking for when I typed in a topic. I found a lot of unuseful feeds that didn't appear to have anything to do with what I was looking for, in the long run. I have to say though that Topix was interesting, atleast, in that fact that it gave me all sorts of news by my zipcode/hometown. That was a bit unusual, in comparison to the others. :)

Note: I subscribed to MERLIN on my Bloglines account. ;)

A few photos from my Disney World trip...

My vacation was great, but I honestly wish it had been a bit longer, as there were still other things I would've liked to have done yet. We visited all 4 of the major parks. It was a lot of fun, and I can't even begin to go into all of the details right now. It would take me hours to write-up lol. I would honestly love to share all of the pictures and videos I took, but unfortunately, there were probably well over 100, and I'm too lazy to upload them all to various places, so here are just a few photos to wet your appetite for your own Disney trip.

Since I am the PiratePrincess, I HAD to post one of the ones I took of Captain Jack Sparrow. ;) I was amused when I looked at my photos on the computer later on, to see that he was looking at my camera. This was taken during the POTC Pirates Tutorial. Oh, and to TheOriginalCraigster- no, I didn't end up having to walk the plank, lol. ;)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_R7dxgfsFj_Y/RoDGld76DGI/AAAAAAAAAAM/u87k5yrVoHI/s320/JackSparrowLOOKINGATME.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080278726667275362" />

I'm really proud of this next photo and how well it turned out since it was sort of candid. I saw several different Aladdins throughout the course of this vacation, but this first Aladdin was my favorite of the bunch, not just in looks, but in personality. This was taken in the Magic Kingdom, not far from the Aladdin magic carpet ride in Adventureland. Aladdin and Genie had a long line of people greeting them, but I just wanted a picture OF them, so I stood on the sidelines. Without my even asking them or trying to get their attention, Aladdin looked over and noticed me standing there, got the Genie's attention, and they both posed for this cute photo for me. Isn't that sweet? :-D Thank you, Aladdin and Genie, for giving me this amusing, special memory!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_R7dxgfsFj_Y/RoDI4976DHI/AAAAAAAAAAU/W-O8yNaajzw/s320/AladdinGeniePOSEtagged.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080281260697980018" />

I'm a Ravenclaw!

I'm
a Ravenclaw!

Whoohoo! A few photos coming soon! :)

I have to admit that I was in the high percentage of people who didn't know what RSS or Newsfeeds were, prior to doing this exercise. Once I got a general idea of what RSS actually was, I found it to be quite interesting, but somewhat difficult to navigate. I definitely made use of the tutorial! I think it could be used to our libraries' advantages in the future, in helping patrons find out information on a great variety of subjects. I'd imagine it would probably make reference questions be more easily answered than before. I think I might even use bloglines myself, as I could read about some of my favorite topics in one place, as opposed to having to "google" EVERYTHING. I run one and belong to, a couple of yahoo groups where I help post news, and I could see this being beneficial to myself as well, in finding out new information. :)

Here is my Bloglines URL: Pirateprincess

For future reference, it will be in the links section of my sidebar. ;)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://23thingspirate.blogspot.com/2007/06/week-4-thing-8-rss-newsreaders.html' title='Week 4, Thing 8. I have started to read about and watch the tutorials for thing 8, but will have to take a break from it, as I've run out of time for now. I'll be away this coming week on vacation in Florida visiting Mickey Mouse and some fellow pirates (perhaps there will be some cool photos here when I come back. *Wink* lol). Sorry for the inconvenience, to those of you whom I've been helping, but I'll be back on here by June 25th. Have a great one, everyone! I love this thing! I even named it! lol It's the first digital camera I've ever had. My dad and stepmom gave it to me as a Christmas gift this past December. The camera is an HP Photosmart R725. It has optical zoom, and it's very user-friendly, which are 2 qualities that I really wanted in a digital camera.

I love the fact that digital cameras allow you to see the photo you've taken right away, and you have the option of deleting the picture if you didn't like the way it turned out. Except in extreme cases, there will be no more usage of disposable cameras for me! This particular camera lets you change the shooting mode and also allows you to edit your photos in some ways, add sound descriptions, etc. My camera even shoots video, as well! It's very simple to transfer the photos to your computer, too. You just plug the cable into the computer, open the software that came with the camera, hit "Transfer," and presto! Instant photos! :) I take much better quality photos now, thanks to my digital camera. I take it practically everywhere with me!

Week 3, Thing 6

Originally uploaded by 23thingspirateprincess

I had a bit of trouble understanding what mash-ups are, but I think I got the general idea. I'd never even heard of Flickr until I started doing "23 Things." I hope this gets easier for me, the longer I use the account. I did find tags and the way that Flickr groups photos together rather interesting though. I liked the fact that I could type in various topics into the search function, and find many photos having to do with that topic (among others), all grouped together in one place. I also appreciated the way that Flickr lets you post a photo right to your blog and sets up the entry automatically for you. That's pretty cool! :)

I'm doing exercise 5B. Here is a picture, taken by myself, that I've uploaded to my new Flickr account. You can also find it using the tag "mdlearning2" if you go to flickr.com. This photo was taken on our kick-off day for the Summer Reading program (notice the blue shirts and lei). I had decided that this was the perfect opportunity to start snapping photos, especially since it was right in time for "23 Things." Here, a co-worker of mine is working behind the Circulation desk at our library.

Note: Yes, I had her permission to post this! ;)

Hi again! I had to take down this awesome custom template I found of the talented Mr. Johnny Depp (as I am a PIRATE princess lol) because I discovered that for some reason my permalinks were not clickable with that particular template. Blahhhh! I hope I can figure out a way around that. In the meantime, I'll use this pink template, I guess!

In other news, we started our Summer Reading Program kickoff today. I took my digital camera with me and took some photos, so I can't wait to upload a picture or 2 to the flickr account I'll be creating shortly for Thing 5, and then I'll share it here.

Ciao for now! :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://23thingspirate.blogspot.com/2007/06/hi-again.html' title='Hi again! I liked the fact that you could either read or listen to the voiceover (or both).

The easiest of the 7 & 1/2 habits for me was "Play!" I had a harder time choosing which one would be the most difficult, but I ultimately decided upon "View problems as challenges" because I'll admit it- sometimes I can become easily frustrated when I don't understand something.

Ciao for now!

Helllooooo (aka Week 2, Thing 1)

Arr, Matey!

Hiya. I'm the PiratePrincess, and this is my blog for Learning 2.0's "23 Things." I hope you like it. :)

I was already some-what aware of how blogging worked, as I've had previous experiences with Xanga , Myspace, and Live Journal so the hardest part of setting up this blog for me was choosing a blog address that wasn't already taken by someone else. Ugh!

Well, that's all for now. I look forward to extending my technological knowledge this summer, lol. Please feel free to comment me if you'd like to! I'd love to meet librarians from other places. :)

Ciao for now!
